Will my cohabiting partner have rights to my house?

Cohabiting partners do not have the same rights as married couples regarding finances. Unless the house is jointly owned, they will have no automatic right to a share of the property unless they can prove that they have acquired an interest in the property.

An interest could be acquired if they made a contribution to the purchase of the property, made mortgage repayments, or paid for home improvements. Alternatively, if your partner can show there was a shared intention that they would have a financial interest in the property – they may be able to acquire an interest.
