What is the difference between civil partnership and marriage in England & Wales?

A marriage can involve a religious or civil ceremony, while a civil partnership is formed by signing a civil partnership document. Civil partners cannot call themselves “married” in a legal context. Marriages are ended by divorce, while civil partnerships are ended through dissolution. The process is fundamentally the same.
