What is couples counselling?

Couples counselling is a specialised form of psychotherapy aimed at enhancing a relationship between two partners who may be dating, engaged, married, or cohabiting. A therapist will act as a neutral facilitator to help couples express their feelings and thoughts while guiding them toward constructive solutions.

The primary goals of couples counselling include:

Helping couples to improve how they communicate with each other by expressing their thoughts and feelings more clearly and openly. Couples can be taught strategies to resolve disagreements.

Couples can work through specific issues that have arisen such as infidelity, major life changes, financial disagreements, and parenting conflicts.

Couples counselling aims to help a couple view their relationship more objectively, and encourages them to reconnect for a  healthier relationship.
