How should a school treat divorcing parents?

A school must treat all parents with parental responsibility equally, unless there is a court order limiting a parent’s involvement. This means involving both parents about the child’s education.

In practice a school should send duplicate copies of school reports, newsletters, and other communications to both parents.

They should also inform both parents about any extra curricula activities such as sports day or school plays.

A school should invite both separated parents to attend parents’ evenings – either together or apart depending on the circumstances.

Unless a parent has an order stating that the child lives with them, a school must seek the written consent for any school trips outside of England and Wales from both parents.

A school should prioritise the child’s welfare while remaining neutral in any parental dispute.
