Are there any McKenzie friend rules?
A McKenzie friend is a person who can provide moral support, take notes, help with case papers, and quietly give advice to a litigant in person during court proceedings.
A McKenzie friend is not allowed to address a court directly, question witnesses, act as the litigant’s agent, or sign court documents on behalf of the litigant.
The involvement of a McKenzie friend is always at the Judge’s discretion. Judges’ have the power to refuse to permit a McKenzie friend to assist if they believe their involvement is not suitable, or if it might undermine the efficient administration of justice.
