What is a civil partner?

A civil partner is a person who is in a legally recognised relationship with another person, known as a civil partnership. This relationship is similar to marriage and is available to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples. A civil partnership provides similar legal rights and responsibilities as married couples such as an equal duty to maintain each other financially, and the right to inherit each other’s property.
